BUILDING IN BANSKO TO BE RESTRICTED

Bulgaria’s famous Bansko mountain resort, once a haven for winter sports but now seeking a year-round appeal, announced plans to restrict construction activities.
The resort town that sits 150km south of Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, has seen lately construction and improvements going on apace and the tourism industry booming after decades of stagnation. Now authorities plan to divide it into three zones, where construction works will be prohibited, limited or monitored respectively.
Bansko boasts the lowest unemployment rate in Bulgaria, set at under 4%, namely thanks to jobs creation in the construction sector, mayor Alexander Kravarov told journalists.
According to Kravarov the development of neighbouring Dobrinishte and Razlog will attract part of Bansko tourist flow. The resort currently offers accommodation to 30,000 tourists. More than 1000 new beds in hotel rooms and apartment houses opened during the latest ski season and another 2,500 new hotel rooms and apartments in holiday villages are planned.
In the summer, tourists may expect to find their leisure time fully occupied with the arrival of an equestrian centre, a golf course designed by British star Ian Woosnam, and bike and hiking trails.

BULGARIA STILL RATING TOP FOR INVESTMENT

In the second quarter of 2006 Bulgaria offered investors a 137 per cent annual return on investment. With a stable resale market it has confirmed its worthiness as a destination that intends to stay at one of the top spots.
Borrowing for mortgages has become cheaper as rates have dropped from 7% to 5.95%. Also deposits have dropped in some cases from 30% to 25%, this allows greater return for the investor.
With EU membership expected in 2007, resorts such as Bansko continue to attract a strong tourist market, aided by cheaper flights from the UK.

Bulgaria’s top ski resort of Bansko has introduced an online alert to prevent tourists from wandering off in avalanche-frequented areas. Color-coded, depending on the danger, Bansko’s risky zones are publicized in hopes of avoiding tragedies, 24 hours daily newspaper reports. Currently there are five dangerous zones – “Todorka” and “Chashata”, where the threat is serious and “Palashitsa”, the gullies to “Vihren” chalet, and the gullies to “Damianitsa” where there is a moderate danger of avalanches.

In 2006 Bansko municipality will spend enough money on infrastructural development projects. A bridge over the river Glazne will be built, which will provide access to the gondola lift and will take over a part of the traffic. BGN 6 million will be allocated by the government for building a ring road. Money will also be allocated for renovating a number of cultural and historic monuments: chapels, churches, monasteries and ethnographic museums.
